Dear Families,

Third grade has planned online instruction while we are not in school to keep our students learning!  We’ve also included a list of resources to explore.   Please feel free to contact Melissa Heller at hellerme@hickoryschools.net or Debra Kinal at kinalde@hickoryschools.net with any questions or if you would like a Prodigy password for your student.  Thank you!

Math:

Happy Numbers has offered free accounts to all students and we signed each third grader up!  Please go to https://happynumbers.com/ and select “I’m a student” and enter the code 409450.  Select your student’s name and they will be prompted to take a placement assessment to deliver appropriate instruction.  Aim for 20 minutes of math practice daily.

Additionally, all students were signed up for a prodigy account play.prodigygame.com.  If you would like a password so students can play and practice math, please email hellerme@hickoryschools.net

Please make sure students are practicing their multiplication/division facts daily for at least 10 minutes.  All third grade students need to have their multiplication facts mastered by the end of third grade!

Reading:

Students were assigned accounts and reading passages through ReadWorks at  https://www.readworks.org/.  Select “student login,” enter the class code of X6K4VD, select your student’s name and enter the password of “1234.”  Students will see a list of assignments that includes reading a passage and answering questions.  The goal is to complete one each weekday.

Students also have an account on Epic! at no cost during the school day.   Please access the site at https://www.getepic.com/sign-in and choose student login.  Enter the code cux9586 and select your student’s name.  In the upper right hand corner, there is a mailbox symbol with 2 collections assigned, Culture and Math.  Students can choose any of the selections in the collections.  Please have your child read for 20 minutes each day either on Epic! or an appropriate book for their level and interest.

Social Studies:

Third graders can access their Scholastic News at https://sn3.scholastic.com/ and login as a student with the password shipflag9259.  From there, they can explore current and past issues, watch videos, take quizzes, play games, and learn new vocabulary.

Science:

Mystery Science has created a parent page for science remote learning.  There are a ton of mini-lessons or full lessons at https://mysteryscience.com/school-closure-planning for grade levels K-5 that include optional activities!

Cross-Curriculum:

Khan Academy put together a comprehensive learning page for all students that includes suggested schedules, and links to lesson and videos at https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vSZhOdEPAWjUQpqDkVAlJrFwxxZ9Sa6zGOq0CNRms6Z7DZNq-tQWS3OhuVCUbh_-P-WmksHAzbsrk9d/pub?fbclid=IwAR3IZOxk2Y6qdHwLhAo0i5KpLae51xsttYIyXaC97B6fVfk7mRl83BHCLp4&urp=gmail_link
